The Yard

In New Zealand, it is possible to disagree with a manager as long as this is done in a very indirect way. Some migrants struggle to express disagreement in a suitably polite way. Ben and Hans are discussing some differences regarding one of the teams working in the orchards. Hans is a new migrant.

If you were Ben how would you have responded?

  • In the same way. Hans has disagreed in a very direct manner.

  • Asked Hans why he disagrees so strongly rather than responding to him in a similar manner.

  • Let it pass and then got one of the other guys to talk to him later about how rude he sounds when he disagrees.

If you were Ben how would you have responded?

  • Feedback

Rather than snapping back it would be a good strategy for Ben to ask Hans why he disagrees so strongly. Hans's disagreement did seem a bit rude, and could have been expressed more appropriately. It takes time for migrants to learn how to do this.

Yes, it would be a good strategy for Ben to ask Hans his reasons for disagreeing. Hans is still learning how to express his disagreement in a polite way. It can take time for migrants to learn how to do this.

This is a possibility. However, rather than getting someone else to talk to him a better strategy could be for Ben to ask Hans why he disagrees so strongly. For many migrants, learning to express disagreement appropriately can take time.
